About Storrington - West Sussex

Information about Storrington - West Sussex:----Storrington is a village in West Sussex in the Horsham District, and one of two parishes of Storrington and Sullington,in the foot of the South Downs. The High Street is the main street and the A283 runs directly through the middle and connects Storrington to Steyning in the east and Pulborough to the west.
Storrington is mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Estorestone'---meaning a place well known for storks.A charter to hold a regular market was granted by Henry IV in 400,together with three fairs
during the year,on Mayday,Wednesday of Whit week and the Feast of Martin on November 11th.
Tanning and blacksmithing were also important industries and only faded away in the 20th century.
Rabbit breeding was another significant industry and an association with this still exists with a number of local place names called the warren--such as Warren Hill,Sullington Warren and Warren Croft. The working/small industry background has been left behind architecturally. Now the Church, the Dominican convent known as The Abbey and a small door in Browns lane are historically significant.
Since 1945 Storrington has expanded greatly with a variety of housing projects enlarging the village. There is open countryside a few minutes from the town centre.
Parham Park-towards Pulborough is a large country house with parkland and a large herd of deer.It is open most weekends to visitors, and also Little Thakeham nearby.
The places of worship are St Marys Church and the Priory of Our Lady which is RC,The Roman Catholic Bishop of Arundel lived nearby for a while, and other denominations have places as well.
The town has a large recreation ground with football and cricket pitches. It also has a Waitrose, butchers, clothes shops, delicatessens, hardware store, estate agents, coffee shop, charity shop
and three pubs--The New Moon,The Anchor Inn and the White Horse Inn,a variety of restaurants,a museum and a Post Office. The nearest large town is Worthing, followed by Horsham.Mainline trains can be picked up at Pulborough or Amberly and trains to London terminate at Victoria, and trains to Gatwick take about 25 minutes.Storrington is also associated with Hugh de Selincourts cricket novel
called The Cricket Match with chestnut trees and duck pond.In some editions a cartoon map of the village is used in end pages.John Parker wrote a sequel in 'The Village Cricket Match in 1977.
