About Holmfirth - West Yorkshire

In West Yorkshire, just north of the Peak District, lies the small town of Holmfirth. Like much of the former West Riding, Holmfirth’s development is associated with the textile industry, and local firms still supply materials to some of the well known names in fashion.

The town's main attraction here is its location for BBC television’s Last of the Summer Wine. It isn’t too difficult to find some of the locations such as Nora Batty’s steps. The house itself is private, but the tearoom next door services up refreshments from a kitchen which is actually Compo’s bedroom in the series! Over in the courtyard by the church it’s hard to miss the famous Sid’s Café. The owners have set up a touring bus to visit some of the other popular locations used in the series, such as the White Horse Pub, although the interior scenes are filmed in a studio. The steps close to the café have seen their wear and tear not from the antics of Compo, Cleg and Foggy, but probably from the once thriving textile industry as the weavers made their way to their cottages through the maze of snickets and steep back alleys.
