About Dorchester - Dorset

Information about Dorchester - Dorset:

The town of Dorchester was first recorded in Roman times as Durnovaria although there were iron age settlements based around Maiden Castle from around 4000BC. Evidence of Roman Durnovaria still exists, there are the ruins of a Roman Town House behind the County Hall, there is also a Roman Bath that sits under one of the main car parks in the town, there are plans to develop the site and allow the Baths to be seen. There is a small section of the Roman Town Wall near the Top of Town roundabout and near the market you can see the remains of the British earth works at Maumbury Rings which were used by the Romans for an Amphitheatre.

The town grew in Saxon times as a thriving market town, and the county town of Dorset since in the 1305, the town was at the centre of the Puritan emigration the colonies, in fact a Dorchester Rector was instrumental in setting up the settlement, Dorchester Massachusetts.

There have been several famous characters who have lived in and around the town, Judge Jefferey's was infamous for sentencing 300 of the Duke of Monmouth's men to death or transportation in the Oak room of the Antelope Hotel in 1685 his town lodgings are now a Pizza restaurant. The Tolpuddle Martyrs who started the first trade union were sentenced to transportation in 1833. William Barnes the poet lived just outside the town at Whitcombe where he was the Church curate, and of course Tomas Hardy lived all his life in and around the town and of course based many of his stories in the area, Dorchester being referred to as Caster bridge.

Today Dorchester is in the midst of allot of change and development, from Prince Charles model development at Poundbury which is a mix of new housing, shops, restaurants and small industrial units, to the old Eldridge Pope site, which promises to bring a 5 star hotel, new shops, a new cinema, arts centre and luxury apartments. The town is fairly small, although the population is growing every year, there are many shops, pubs, (even though the towns main brewery has gone you can sample Dorchester brewed beer at the borough arms on the high street which has it's own micro brewery.) cafes and restaurants, for visitors there are 5 museums to visit, the County Museum which has some fine local history, the military museum, the Tutankhamun Exhibition, the Dinosaur museum and the Terracotta warriors Exhibition. The town has 4 main hotels and many B and B's, there is also vibrant market on a Wednesday in the Town centre. Dorchester is on the Main A35 trunk road that goes through Dorset and is approximately 10 miles from the sea. Dorchester also has two railway stations that connect with London and Bristol.

The town has a small carnival in June, an arts festival during the summer and arguably the biggest event, the Dorset County Show one of the biggest country shows in the South. Dorchester is only 7 miles from Weymouth, and will be benefiting from the influx of visitors to the area when Weymouth and Portland host the Sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games.
