About Charlestown - Cornwall
Information about Charlestown - Cornwall:
Charlestown harbour is located on Cornwall’s south coast a short distance from St Austell and the popular Eden Project. The harbour area has changed little since the days of sail and has been used in many period films for that very reason.
The harbour is owned and operated by Square Sail and their fleet of three traditional square-rigged ships is based there when not at sea.
The harbour and town were purpose built by local land owner Charles Rashleigh for the export of copper and china clay. The presence of the tall ships alongside the quay and the fact that the area has changed little since the 1800s leads visitors to feel they have stepped back in time to Charlestown’s past and it is a fitting home to the only fleet of square rigged ships in the world that supports itself entirely through paid work.
In addition to the harbour, visitors may wish to visit the Charlestown Shipwreck, Rescue and heritage Centre which includes the largest U.K. collection of artifacts and treasure recovered from shipwrecks.
